Positivity

Positivity. This book teaches us to think positively and find happiness within ourselves, without needing to rely on external things. Achieving true happiness depends on keeping a calm mind and seeking a life that is more fulfilling, smarter, wealthier, and healthier than before.
A few years ago, a TV station filmed an interview with many people on the street, asking just one question: "Are you happy?" This question received many different answers, which made this interview get shared many times on social media, causing millions of people to become interested in this simple question.
Are you happy? This question is easy to ask, but it's also a question that everyone finds difficult to answer. Are we happy? How can we be happy? What kind of person deserves to be happy? Today, let's listen to the summary of this book titled "The Power of Positivity," written by Harry Edelson.
The author of this book is a consultant to many large companies, has served on the boards of 125 large companies, invested in more than 150 companies, and is a prominent financial analyst. He is a man who has money, power, and a famous name. But as a child, he was a poor boy. At the age of one, his father passed away. He had only his mother, who worked as a cleaner for others, to raise a family of four children. His family was extremely poor. Sometimes they didn't have enough food for two meals a day. As a child, he wanted to play with a ball but had no money to buy one. He could only use trash stuffed into a bag to play with. He worked hard and studied until he graduated and achieved the success he has today. Through this book, he wants to show everyone that a person can go from zero to one hundred very quickly, and poverty cannot be a barrier preventing people from achieving happiness.
So what is it that prevents people from having happiness? The author says it's technology. The author believes technology makes people lack happiness. It can make life easier, but it can also make life more complicated. For example, the telephone. This device makes it easy for people to connect with each other, but it also makes people lack happiness. Do you remember 20 years ago, when you and your family would sit and watch TV together, laughing together after dinner? Does that kind of atmosphere still exist today? Everyone is busy with their phones because what's on the phone is too captivating, so much so that we forget to live in the real world.
The phone has caused people to lose their privacy. People can know everything about you: what you are doing, where you are going, who you meet, who you contact—they know everything. Often, when new technologies emerge, they inevitably bring negative consequences. As of now, social media is almost everything. And have you noticed that on social media, the kind of story that spreads the fastest across the world is scandalous news, negative news. An experiment showed that one piece of negative news has 40 to 70 times more impact than one piece of positive news that happened. So if day after day you are only with your phone and always listening to and watching negative stories, you will absorb negative influences without realizing it. The question is, can you be happy then? Hearing this, you might say, "What if I just turn it off and don't look at it at all? Wouldn't that be fine?" It's not possible either. Those social media platforms will bring pressure to you all the same. Harry Edelson has written about seven social media platforms and their impact on society. For example, Facebook. A family posted a photo of their whole family on vacation at the beach on their social media. As a result, when they returned home, their house had been broken into and almost everything was stolen. The reason for this, you should understand. Be a little more careful next time. Another one, you probably know Snapchat, an American social media platform that allows users to send secret messages to their friends.     And it will be automatically deleted in a very short period of time. It's quite thrilling. If you don't see the message in time, you will surely regret it. People are like that, curious about what they haven't seen yet, like to follow what they can't touch or see. This application has received a lot of support from young people and has more than 300 million users. More than 4 billion photos are sent back and forth every day on this application. But, although it has this feature, sometimes it can be screenshotted and used for some activity that could be dangerous to the user. This is the negative impact that social media brings to us, along with the convenience and fun that we get from it.
Alright, let's get to our main point: how to be happy. The author advises that first, we must reduce our use of technology so that it doesn't obstruct our process of finding happiness. And we must understand one reason: happiness comes from within the mind. It is not related to external things. Our emotions, our feelings, all come from the mind. Therefore, we must control our mind, command our mind. Then happiness will come on its own. So how can one command their own mind? Here, we will talk about an event that originated with an American military doctor named Henry. This phenomenon was later named the placebo effect. Henry was a medic during World War II who suffered from the war. One day, his morphine ran out. He couldn't inject it to the soldiers to treat their wounds. He had no choice. He took saline solution to inject and lied to the wounded soldiers that this was a painkiller. As a result, 40% of the soldiers believed they didn't feel any pain when their wounds were being treated. After the war ended, many people heavily criticized him, but later, much research explained this matter, which confirmed that what he did was indeed rational. This event is called the placebo effect. In fact, this theory was discovered long ago and is known as the Hawthorne effect. This theory came from an experiment by the company GE. GE managers said that to increase work efficiency and make the work environment better than before, the company changed the lighting to be brighter and installed a new air conditioning system. As a result, work efficiency did increase. But in reality, they didn't do anything.     The lighting and air conditioning systems were not changed. The employees just worked harder because they heard the company said they had changed the work environment to be better than before. In many similar experiments, people were given a placebo, such as chewing gum or something similar, instead of real medicine for the patients, and were told that this was a treatment. As a result, the patients' conditions did indeed improve.
Conversely, in the same treatment, if the person who is the doctor or the nurse tells the patient that it could be dangerous or have negative side effects, the patient's condition will worsen as well. As in one case, they experimented on a prisoner who was arrested for questioning. They put the prisoner in a room and tied his hands behind his back and blindfolded him. They took a knife and scraped it on his neck, letting water drip down, pretending it was a drop of blood that was dripping, and lied to the prisoner that "we have cut your artery." Five hours later, the prisoner died. He died because he was too terrified. In fact, they had not even cut his hand. This experiment shows that your thinking is truly important. If you think about positive things, are optimistic, your life will also be full of happiness, which will make your daily activities more energetic.
So what should you do to make your life active and full of hope? The author has shown us the way: we must focus on the solution, not on the problem. 20 years ago, Harry Edelson met a woman who had mental health issues. She had lost her job, her family was broken, her life was meaningless, and she wanted to commit suicide. Harry gave advice to that woman. He told her to write down the problems she had encountered on a piece of paper, one by one. And behind those problems, write down the solutions that she could think of. After that, she started to implement those solutions. Later, her life became better. Those problems were solved. Therefore, if you work hard and are still not recognized, you are frustrated with your work, it makes you unhappy, you can try changing that job. If you are hurt because you lost a competition, you should try to improve your abilities to prepare for the next competition. If you are in an abusive relationship that is not good, you can consider whether you should leave or find a solution to the problem you are facing. When you encounter a problem, you will surely feel unhappy. You surely need a place to release those negative emotions. You can release it in a very appropriate way. Don't hurt others because of our problems. Don't blame, don't get angry, don't be destructive, but you have to solve it with a peaceful and calm method. This is the true root of happiness.
The author adds that you should set a small goal for yourself. When you achieve it, you will get a feeling of joy. It doesn't matter how trivial that thing is, such as: today I will clean the house, today I will cook for the family to eat together, today I will do some exercise, and so on. The small goal that you set for yourself today, you must finish it today. You can also set your long-term goals, such as when to get married, when to graduate, when to get a promotion, and so on. Doing this is to add meaning to your life. And you have to work hard to achieve it successfully. Those goals make us live with more meaning and make us feel that we still have many goals to achieve. When we do what we love, it will make us happier. Abraham Lincoln said a very meaningful phrase: "You are as happy as you make up your mind to be." When we decide to walk towards happiness, happiness will appear on that path. The main idea above is to show us that there is no happiness that is equal to the happiness of your own mind.
Harry also showed three paths to happiness, which are: make yourself healthier, smarter, and wealthier. This means that intelligence, good health, and wealth are not happiness, but they are the paths to happiness.
First, let's talk about the relationship between happiness and good health. Harry believes that good health makes people happy. Speaking of health, the placebo effect mentioned above is very effective. Some people, just from a little cold, suddenly feel that they might be sick. They start to worry, start to feel that they have a disease. Thinking like this is not right. Instead, you should often tell yourself that "my health is good, no disease can easily affect me," even if you are sick at that moment. Only you yourself can tell yourself and tell your body that "I'm okay." Often tell yourself this, and your body and your mind will cooperate to overcome the diseases that are all there. Everyone can get sick someday, it's just a matter of before or after. But what's important is that we must learn to control our own emotions because it has a direct influence on our health condition. I think that for this reason, we don't need the author to bring it up. You all know this well, it's just that some people forget to practice it. Science is advancing, the healthcare sector also has many new breakthroughs. There are vitamins, supplements, stem cells, and many other new technologies that can help us live longer and be healthier than before. But our minds, our emotions, only we can control them. Learn to think positively about your health situation, and you will have better health.
Having finished talking about the first method that can make our lives move towards happiness, we will move on to the second method that can make us achieve happiness, which is intelligence. We recognize that innate intelligence is indeed real. Some people are born with intelligence, learn things quickly, learn fast, are more agile than others, and so on. But this is just a natural gift. What is important is practice, study, to sharpen your skills. Harry mentioned in this book that if you want to be successful, what's important is not what you know. The important thing is to know what you don't know. We may be born not smart, but we must work hard to study and gain knowledge to hone our abilities. In this era, the person who knows more information is the winner because that information is on the internet. You can learn everything about what you want to know and understand. You can find what you truly love and start researching your world. To do this, you need to develop three more important skills, which are: increase your reading speed, increase your calculation ability, and increase your memory ability.
First, let's talk about increasing reading speed, because reading takes a lot of time in a day. A task that should take one hour to complete, why must it take a whole day? A financial analyst can read 4 to 10 company financial reports in one day because they are an expert. They have done this same thing for years. But if you were to read it, it might take a month and you still wouldn't understand the company's situation. Harry believes that reading is a very important way to get information in this era. You need to read as much as possible to absorb as much information as the task allows. Why did we create the V-Read program? To allow all of you to have time to do other, more important things. We are willing to spend time reading to absorb the important content in books and report it to all of you about what we have learned from the books. Let the experts do the expert work; that's still the best choice. If you have time to read the whole book, can read fast, and also understand the content, congratulations, you have a special ability that most people don't have. Because some people don't like to read, are lazy to read, or read slower than you. And along with this, there are some techniques you must also learn to make your reading faster and more effective. For example, read only the parts that are important and use your thumb and index finger to guide your eyes to the top of the book page to prepare to turn to the next page. Doing this can help increase reading speed by up to 10%.
Let's look at the second ability, which is the ability to calculate. Thinking fast is one of your advantages. You can use it every day. Some people, just to calculate a small amount of money, need to pull out a calculator to use instead of their brain. You should use your brain to think, to sharpen it to be more clever. It can save us a lot of time. The third ability is memory. How is your memory? A phone number they just said once, can you remember it? Going to a restaurant to order food with friends, can you remember the food that you ordered? The author advises that you must learn to train your brain with this special ability. As for the author, he can remember up to 100 items that you read to him because he has trained his brain's memory ability. What about you? Do you have any formula for your memory and for the stories that you have heard or seen? The author's memory method is very complicated. We cannot explain it all. There is only one point that we need to know: people remember what they pay attention to. In daily life, we can also observe that if a man and a woman go shopping, what the man remembers is the shoe store, which electronics are in which store, and which brands are available. But what the woman remembers is which store sells cosmetics, where the clothing and handbag stores are, and so on. Because they remember what they pay attention to. For this reason, if you want to remember something, you must connect those things to what you love and pay attention to. Therefore, if you want to have happiness, you must make yourself a smart person. And to be a smart person, you must read faster than before, think faster than before, and remember more than before.
We come to the last important point: make yourself wealthy to have happiness. There is not much to say about this point. Having money means having happiness. Let's get to the main point: how to have money. What we should pay attention to at this point is that the author has presented the complete opposite of the financial books that we have summarized before, which encourage us to create income and not just think about saving. But the author of this book has stated that the first step is we must know how to save. In daily life, you must learn to control yourself, not to spend recklessly. Because those sellers have spent a lot of time finding ways to get money out of your pocket. Therefore, if you don't know how to keep your money safe, no matter how much you earn, it will be useless. The author met a woman who lived almost without spending her money. She only used coupons that she collected from store owners to exchange for daily use items and food and snacks. As Benjamin Franklin said, a penny saved is a penny earned. When money is abundant, we don't see its importance. But when your money is scarce, you will see the importance and rarity of it. Money is still money. What changes is our perception of money. Therefore, in any situation, the author wants to awaken our consciousness: always save money, don't let it easily leave us.
After talking about saving money, we will talk about earning money. We always work to exchange for money, whether working for others or for ourselves. To want more money, you have to add more working hours. Some others, they know how to invest. They use money to make money through their methods. Here, we will not explain much about how to save or invest because this is a psychology book that teaches you how to become a person who has happiness, not a finance book that teaches you how to become rich. You all can find many other financial books that we have summarized on V-Read, such as "The Path to Financial Freedom," "Rich Dad Poor Dad," and "The Richest Man in Babylon."
The above is the important content in the book "Positivity" that I have summarized for all of you. Let's review the important points again. First, we talked about the source of happiness. We can get happiness because of our inner mind. We must have faith in ourselves that we have happiness, always giving positive energy to ourselves. It is a special power that makes us get what we have thought. If we think about bad paths, bad things will happen. But if we think about good paths, good things will happen. Next, we described three ways to achieve happiness. First is good health, second is intelligence, and third is wealth.
The above is the summary that we have extracted from the book "Positivity: How to Be Happier, Healthier, Smarter, and More Prosperous," written by Harry Edelson.
